Hurricane season is here again, and with it comes the annual reminder to check around the house, stock up on essentials, and prepare for whatever the skies may bring. While we all hope for a calm season, a little preparation goes a long way.
I’ll admit, I’ve learned this firsthand over the years. I remember putting downspout extenders around my home to make sure water flowed away from the foundation. Small step, big payoff when the rains hit. And if you’ve lived in Virginia long enough, you probably remember Hurricane Isabel — 18 inches of rain in a single day, massive flooding, roads underwater, and yes… even the dam breaking at a favorite fishing pond because someone (no names mentioned!) forgot to check if the beavers had clogged the spillway.
So, when it comes to storms, a little prevention can save a lot of headaches.
Here are a few key things you can do to prepare your home and family this hurricane season (courtesy of Progressive):
Check your gutters and downspouts — make sure water can flow freely away from your home.
Bring in or secure outdoor furniture, grills, and yard items that could become projectiles in high winds.
Keep a supply of water, nonperishable food, flashlights, and batteries ready in case of power outages.
Review your insurance coverages and know how to report a claim if you need to.

And if you’re the kind of person who worries, these tips will give you peace of mind. But if your motto is more like Alfred E. Neuman’s “What, me worry?” — well, maybe just check those gutters anyway.
Stay safe this season, and remember: a little preparation now makes all the difference later.
