2 Simple DIY Halloween Decor Ideas

Add a touch of homemade charm to your Halloween decorating this year with two easy, classic projects. Both can be made in an afternoon and stored for future seasons.

Floating Cheesecloth Ghosts

Ghost Decoration in Soft Lighting

Create a few of these wispy figures to hang on your porch, in your windows, or around the house.

Materials:

  • White cheesecloth or lightweight gauze

  • Foam ball or small balloon for the head

  • Fishing line or thin wire

  • Spray starch or a glue-and-water mix

  • Black felt or marker for eyes

Instructions:

  1. Form a head shape by resting the foam ball on top of a cup or jar.

  2. Drape the cheesecloth over the ball so it falls naturally.

  3. Spray the fabric with starch (or brush on the glue mixture) until lightly coated.

  4. Once the cloth dries and stiffens, remove the ball, add eyes, and thread fishing line through the top.

  5. Hang the ghost from a ceiling, porch beam, or tree branch.

For a nighttime effect, place a small LED tealight underneath the ghost to make it softly glow.

Paper Bat Garland or Wall Decor

Halloween Bats on Beige Wall

Materials:

  • Black cardstock or construction paper

  • Scissors

  • Pencil and bat template

  • String or fishing line (optional)

  • Removable tape or adhesive

Instructions:

  1. Trace and cut out several bats in a mix of sizes.

  2. Fold each bat slightly along the center to give the wings a raised look.

  3. Attach them to walls, mirrors, or cabinets using removable tape, or string them together to create a garland for your mantel or doorway.

For a dynamic display, place the bats in a scattered pattern as if they are flying across the room.
